Updates and Such

Hello Lovers of Lovlies and Learning!

I do realize that it seems to take forever between Blog Posts. On average, I am teaching twice a week and have pretties to make, my stores to tend to and other business affairs to handle and as we know… I am a one woman show.  I love you all, I promise :)

I did update my calendar this morning with new dates . . . check it!

Newsletter notes:  I took last week off.  I didn’t mean to take the entire week off from all things Magyk . . . but then there were tax *things* . . . and I’ll just say that I am glad that it’s over for the time being.

Question of the week: ”Since PMC is torch fired (generally) can bottleglass be used as a gem stone? Specifically, sea tumbled beachglass of which I have buckets. I know that its melting point is fairly low if the piece is of an older vintage that’s why you could throw an old Coke bottle in a fire ring at the beach and end up with a slumpy blob.  Anyway, I have some small gem sized bits that have been tumbled so much they look like gems themselves- spectacular. – Jen F.

Answer: Dear Jen (and others thinking about this idea), Please do not torch fire glass. You are right when you indicate that glass has a low melting point, and more importantly a low heat tolerance and fracture point. It can sit in a bonfire and melt because it is contained in the heat. Glass generally shatters when hit with high heat and exposed to cooler temps, which is what occurs when doing any torch firing. That’s called ‘thermal shock’. Anytime we metal clay artists use glass/ceramic in our work, it is recommended that we kiln fire. So – check out a bead store or glass store in your area and see if they have a kiln and will fire your work for you. If you don’t have luck with that, bring your work to me and I will kiln fire it for you. Be aware that in my recent test firing of beach glass, it changed color . . . from a lovely sea foam green to yellow. I will be test firing again, to see if a lower temp might prevent this, however, I fired at 1170, which is lower than traditional firing.  I will keep you all posted and if you want me to kiln fire for you, know that there are never guarantees.

Have a question about metal clay/firing/gems/making things?  E-Ask me and it will go in next weeks newsletter.  If I don’t know the answer, I will also find it and provide the resource where I got it. Thank you Jen for being the first to jump in! You may also submit a joke :)

Level 1 Certification

This year I jumped through the additional action ‘hoops’ to become a Certification Instructor with PMC Connection (PMCC).

I had previously ‘clayed’ my way through Level I, II, & III certification with Senior Instructor, Lora Hart. I learned so much.  My design skills improved, as well as my ability to implement my often far reaching musings. It was with Lora’s encouragement that I took the plunge to teach certification classes myself.  I cannot thank her enough! I will forever be grateful!

I have scheduled my first class in Level I . . . this December 15 & 16.  The class will take place at my home studio in Altadena.  If you’d like to play, call PMCC for registration: 888-762-2529.

PMCC Level 1 certification is a two-day class designed for the student ready to step beyond the basics.
Each of the four projects in this class combines two or more metal clay construction techniques and challenges the student to create jewelry that is both aesthetically pleasing and functional.

See the projects.

Students explore and demonstrate mastery of basic hollow forms; carving green ware; ring sizing and construction, setting faceted stones, controlled syringe drawing, and forming sheet clay, as well as incorporating functional elements such as bails and embedded wire.

Projects are evaluated according to the care taken with design, joining, finishing, attention to detail, and the student’s understanding of the material covered in discussions. Completion of the class prepares the student for PMCC Certification Levels Two and Three and entities the student to a Certified Artisan discounts honored by most metal clay suppliers.  This 2 day event is $399 plus a $50 materials/studio fee.  You’ll get everything you need to be successful with all four projects!

Weather you want to just improve your skills or teach classes yourself – I cann0t tell you how valuable Certification classes can be.  Do it!  Sign-up today!  You won’t regret it, I promise. Call 1-888-762-2529

Here is all the BRAG :)

Top 10 of Things

I am a Dave Letterman fan.  I don’t generally go to bed until I’ve seen the top ten for the evening :)   So inspired I was by the segment, one day I sat down and created a Top Ten Reasons to take a Metal Clay Arts Class:

So you can probably guess?  I’ve come up with a new one for your consideration:

Top 10 Reasons to Buy Handcrafted Goodness

10) You love handmade goods.

9) Your item is unique and not mass-manufactured.

8) You were able to have a relaxed buying experience.

7) Handmade everything can be customized to you – ask your artist!

6) Your purchase is cooler than anything you’ve seen in a “big box” store

5) Your gift to yourself or someone else will last much longer!

4) Your purchase allowed the artist to buy something *they* needed.

3) You can tell you friends/loved ones that the item you bought was handcrafted.

2) Your purchase is “go green” with little or no waste on the part of the artist.

1) You made a new friend in the artist you purchased from.  They know more about what you like and need and you can order from them FOREVER!

This is still a ‘work in progress’.  Your feedback would be appreciated :)

My shop and home are full of handcrafted beauty that I use everyday.  My tools are stowed in artisan created pottery.  I buy T-shirts for myself and my daughter that are crafted by artisans I know. I have an extensive collection of jewelry and pins that are made by artists.

My top reason for buying handmade is knowing the difference it makes in the life of the artist I have purchased from AND I own beautiful art!  I relate to the idea of this being one’s ‘chosen career’ and what sort of challenges we face.

So as we head into holiday shopping “season” – give a pause – consider the advantages of buying handmade. Consider the experience of shopping in a space like Crafted at the Port of Los Angeles or a local arts fair versus a mall *gasp*. I’d appreciate it if you bought handmade and I know ALL the other artists in the world would appreciate it too!

Be well!

Go make something!

Go find something handcrafted!

OH HAI!

I know, I know!  It’s been a bit of time since I made a “real” blog post.

Honestly, I’d like to have the habit of a weekly blog post fully in place. However, we can see, that I am sometimes time-challenged.  I do update Facebook daily, so if you want to track what’s happening “Like” my Facebook page.  For every 10 “Likes” I am giving away a “Magyk” charm.

So I split the post up, so you can decide which interests you more!

All About Teaching!

I am a metal clay arts instructor.

What is metal clay?  In brief, it is fine metal particles, combined with an organic clay binder.  This material can be handled like modeling clay and you can create anything you want. After it is dry, you fire it in a kiln or with a torch, and VOILA! A creation of your desire.

I am a Level 3 Certified Artisan through PMC Connection and a Level 1 Certification Instructor. I’ve been teaching since 2008 and I love that part of my life.

The summer is over (although it remains hot).  My experiences at teaching venues, was as varied as the artists I had the privilege to teach.  I learned a great deal and had a great time.

My fall teaching schedule is in full swing until mid-December.  I am teaching week 4 at Otis College tomorrow night. I had a cancellation at Glendale for a 2 week advanced series.  “Secret Spaces” at Glendale is still open.

What is “Secret Spaces”?

Secret Spaces

Vessels hold, contain and protect treasures of all sorts.  In this three-part class you will learn how to use a unique armature for creating a container with a lift lid. Students will need to bring a votive candle.

We will talk about hinges and other kinds of vessels.

Go HERE to register.

I still have classes coming up.  Check out my calendar for the dates and locations.

At Crafted, if you don’t know, I have a mini-class almost every Sunday.  November classes will focus on holiday gift giving projects :) .  I am also excited for the possibility of a bigger class space.  While the demonstration are up by the front doors is more spacious, it is filled with people and my sense has been that it would be too ‘busy’.  The Crafted team has indicated that a classroom space is on the slate for Phase 2.

Here are some pictures of happy Artists that took a class at Crafted.

As I work out a few details regarding my schedule . . . These are two classes I am teaching locally – Majestical Roof is in Pasadena and Zinnia is in South Pasadena – before June.

I am pleased to announce that beginning this summer, I will be teaching metal clay magic at Glendale Community College, Santa Monica Jr. College and Otis College – all within the Community Education Programs, or what some refer to as Adult Education.  The class dates will be posted to my calendar.  You will need to go to the sites of the schools to register.

I love, love, lovity, love, love teaching . . . almost as much, if not more that creating art!

I do have sales appearances coming up: March 31, I will be showing and selling at Majestical Roof; 88 N Fair Oaks Ave # 102, Pasadena, CA 91103-3632 (map link). There’s more . . . check out the Calendar! :)   I’m very proud of my new Calendar. Honestly, anytime I can master adding a new wizbang to the site that makes life easier for all, it’s like New Years!

Recently I got turned on the a book by Dr. Robert Anthony, “Beyond Positive Thinking”. In the early pages he describes a concept of the ” . . . the river of life . . .” and now I paraphrase ‘you can go to the river of life with a teaspoon, some may go with a cup . . . a bucket . . . a barrel even . . . the river is there and will always flow’. It’s about what we think we can accept and going for the results we want in our life.

I’m headed to the river with a barrel, drinking it in  . . . and I am always ready to share!

Go make something!  Have a great week!

All my best, Delia

What’s UP!

HI! I’ve been busy . . . how ’bout you?

My daughter is well again so I can hang up my Nurse Ratcheted hat. After three weeks of a wicked cold, the poor thing slipped in the recent, freak hail storm and hurt her back.

It looks like we are headed for some normality! YEAH!

I DID it! “What?” you say . . . finished my application packet for PMC Connection Senior Instructorship – I think I just made up that word – ‘Instructorship’. :) Many of you have heard me chatter about this goal o’ mine to do more, be more, teach more . . . spread metal clay joy where ever I am! This is another step in that direction! I’m excited! I’ll keep you all posted.

Coming up! NEXT WEEKEND! 3/10 “Color It Yours” at Zinnia – In this class we will add color to our metal work . . . liver of sulfur, metal paint, color resin, Prismacolor, and a new material that will be a secret surprise I am dying to try :) I will also do a demo on enamel so you can consider it’s use in the future. I have all the toys you need to play with, it’s part of the class fee. Bring water and money for lunch!

It would be great if you made a piece ahead of time to play with. You can bring several. Don’t brush or burnish your pieces if you intend to use Prismacolor.

It’s okay to come and play without a piece. As a special gift I’ll have at least one piece to share for trying out a technique and other pieces you can purchase at a reasonable price.

Did you get a chance to hear the Christine Kane call? It was awesome.

During the call Christine opened registration for her Uplevel Your Life Program. I like her! I trust her! I’m enrolling in the 8 week program. If you’re considering coaching of any kind, I can’t recommend her work enough. Go check out this link and learn more:http://uplevelyourlife.com/

So come play with me on the 10th and we will color our metal! And oh… yeah . . . GO MAKE SOMETHING!

Have a great weekend.

Where I’ve been . . . Where I’m heading

Hi Everybody!

I do hope everyone is doing well.

Here’s a photo of me at Zinnia.  I did a demonstration of metal clay there.  There were eager observers and it was a lot of fun!

I’m demonstrating how we torch fire metal clay :)

The art show at Zinnia was [apparently] a smashing success. A funny thing happened on the way to Majestical Roof that morning for the show, I had a run-in with a cup of coffee and burned my arm – so I didn’t make it that nite. :(   I was sad to miss the fun.  My works on sale there are still looking for a new home and three pieces have been added to the collection of my work at Zinnia.

Even though we got rained out . . . the February 11 event at Majestical Roof was a lot of fun.  I did a demo there too!  And as of last Tuesday, several works of my art are on display and for sale there.  My sweet friend Rain Hannah of Honey and Ollie took some stunning pictures of my work!

Thank YOU Rain Hannah!

Due to the injured arm, I sadly took no pictures that day.

As the time of year would seem to dictate, there were several students lined up for the February 18 class, that had to miss out due to illness (my daughter Devon still battles a two week cold).  I opted to move forward with one student and we had a great time.  Her name is Kathy and if you ever have the chance to meet her, do ask her about warming pieces by light bulb while patina’g :)

February 26 • 10 – 6 I’ll be teaching my first class of the new year at Majestical Roof – An Introduction to Metal Clay – Plus . . . project specific, slower paced
Future classes TBA.  Use this Buy Now button to pay – the registration form is sent after you are signed up.

Coming up in March . . . 3/10* Color It Yours at Zinnia – that is a corrected date.  *It was 3/18 in my last missive, which was wrong.  In this class we will add color to our metal work . . . liver of sulfur, metal paint, color resin, prisma color, enamel and a new material that will be a secret surprise I am dying to try :)   Use the Buy Now button to pay

I also did a demonstration before my peers of the Prismacolor technique [New Metal Artists Group].  This piece had several layers:

Lastly, to share on my agenda . . . Many of you know that I have spent some time receiving ‘coaching’ to improve the many facets of my life.  Beyond the tremendous support I receive from my closest friends – I view the coaching I receive as incredibly powerful, useful and enriching. Since I am doing some mentoring myself this year it is also a way to recharge and gain new insights to further assist my clients.

I have been privileged to work with Lora Hart in a Mentorial .  In my field and close to home, there has been no one better for me to work with and I have gained a lot!  My work and counsel with Lora has been invaluable in my professional development and recently I had the privilege of experiencing the work she is doing: Crafting Your Creative Voice.  It’s a book she is writing and a new class she is teaching and I was so grateful to get a sneak peak at the whole package!

I’ve been doing ongoing online work in Richard Luck’s programs – talk about a mindset shift!  Going beyond the traditional ‘positive affirmation’ I grew really impressed with his subliminal videos – changes occurred in my thinking, I hadn’t even knew I was making :) .  As a former Personal Development Trainer from the 80′ generation, “positive affirmations” were a staple of my work.  Luck’s work takes it to a whole new level.

This is me with Christine Kane at the end of the December event I attended – UpLevel Live.  I have to say, and I do so with conviction – I came back from that event a happier human than when I left . . . for having met her, worked with her and worked with an amazing group of other folk.  Everyone there had a commitment to improving their businesses because doing so would not only improve their life, but enrich the lives of the people they encountered.

Christine has created many programs that speak to the right brain as much as the left brain in developing a creative business.  I particular appreciate her view of marketing – as a good thing – and an effort that must be done authentically.

I found Christine on the ‘intarweb’ while looking up some other ‘stuff’.  She has an ebook on vision boards I got really excited about.  A plain and simple technique that made it a little less mystical and more attainable to me.  Check that out here.

Christine has a training call coming up.  It’s free! The last time I was on a training call with her, I was so excited afterwards that I couldn’t sleep! :) If you want to Uplevel your whole life – I highly recommend that you sign up for this free training call. I’ll be there!

Overall I am a strong believer in coaching/mentoring/counseling – whatever you’d like to participate in :) .  I understand first hand that ‘going it alone’ is never a good thing.  Doing that was the end to my business and a period of soul-less existence during some trying times.  I don’t recommend it.

I am happy with where I am and where I am heading.  I am comfortable to ask for help and seek guidance from my friends and mentors on a daily basis.  Sometimes it’s just a cuppa joe and a good laugh.

Check out the resources I’ve shared.  Tell me what you think.  Share what resources you’ve used.  Community in many forms is a very good thing.

Have a super-mega-awesome week!
All my best,
Delia

Make something everyday . . . even if it’s trouble! – I said that

Snagglepuss

Q & A – some people wanna know :)

In recent days I’ve been asked a few questions that I have answered individually.  It occurred to me that the same answers in this forum might be a good thing . . . for those that think questions but choose not to ask them :) .  Do you do that? I do, all the time.

“Delia, what’s with all the emails lately????”

Because, I forget stuff! I get a lot of emails . . . in a day . . . a week . . . a month.  With many emails, I tell myself ‘I’ll get back to that.’ or ‘I should put that on my calendar’ and I don’t get back ‘to that’ and I don’t ‘put that on my calendar’ because I forget and I get distracted.

Want to know my biggest distraction – my CAT!  She likes to hang about the computer while I’m checking my mail and paws at my computer and walks across my keyboard often and if I push her away it invites the biting engagement . . . she wants to play.

k… not on my computer in this pic…and distracting all the same

Like many folk, I have other tasks that need to be accomplished . . . in a day . . . a week . . . a month.  I have a teenage daughter (do I really need to elaborate?), three dogs along with the cat, laundry, dishes, meals to prepare, shopping, dusting, vacuuming and the all-important bathroom clean . . . and all of this has to work within my business actions and I’ve got to take time for myself to replenish.

So I send more emails now . . . because I forget and because I know that it is likely that the people in my life forget and I don’t want you to miss out on something – I think that would be meansauce. Those that took serious exception, asked to be removed  . . . it’s all good.

“DELIA! What’s with Charm School?  Really? Seriously?  I feel like your just trying to make money off me” (and honestly that is exactly how that question came to me. :) )

I have poorly communicated “Charm School” and it’s intention.  My bad.  Sometimes I get so excited and rush to share and leave out key information.

I believe that art, in any form, is an expression of our feelings about life, the universe and everything. SO – hanging out with me in my shop for three hours is an opportunity to learn a little about metal clay and how to make a piece of meaning for someone you care about – yourself included.

As far as the making money part?  Well, it is what I do for a living . . . and honestly $60 is just enough to cover the clay you’ll get, and my teaching/tutoring time.  I’m not handing anyone a package of clay and saying ’okay, make a charm’.  You will get a pack of tools to use with the clay, a demo from me on how to make a charm and all the guidance you need to successfully complete the process – and a pretty box to put your charm in should it be a gift for someone else :) .

“What’s with the urgency and deadline on charm school Delia!? You sound like a ‘pitchman’.”  (yup, that’s a quote too)

First and foremost, if you thought I was boring, would you want to play? The energy of urgency is about getting you excited and considering possibilities.  Secondly, that money tree I had in the backyard, blew down in the ‘Great Winds of 2011’ and so did the clay tree.  I need your registration fees to buy the necessary supplies to have class.  That is also why I set registration deadlines for classes. Is that a bad thing? :)

Those were three questions I received most and that I felt important to address.  I’ll answer more, if ya ask.

I am an artist, a mom AND a solo-preneur. For a lot of really good reasons (I promise they are all good reasons), I make my living as an artist – cuz Zeus knows no one gets paid to be a mom :) – It is it’s own reward, right?.

I sell the wearable art I create and some of my photography. I teach metal clay arts and mentor those that want to create their own businesses.

“Heavens to Murgatroyd”* art is so incredibly important to our society.  I really believe that it is oh-so-easy to get caught up in the day-to-day routines and forget that the expression of ourselves is so important.

Just for a moment . . . consider a song you’ve heard recently . . . a song that really moved you . . . you felt compelled to sing along or tap your foot or cry or laugh or it reminded you of something long forgotten.  Consider that you probably wanted to find the person that sung the song and THANK them for the song . . . for the difference that song made in your life.

I’ll bet you’ve seen TV shows that created the same feeling? Photographs? A website? A book? A teacher?

When I fired my first piece of metal clay I felt so empowered and excited and in awe.

When I taught my first class, I cried at the expression on people’s faces as their pieces transformed from clay to pure silver . . . I still get choked up :) .

When I sold my first piece of wearable art, I teared up.  The woman that bought it told me “I don’t think I should spend this money, but this really speaks to me and needs to go home with me.” **warm-fuzzy alert**

When I sold the “Celebrate” bowl, the woman who bought it asked me to sign the book it had appeared in.  She called me a couple of days later to share about the special place she placed it and the special things she stows in it. THAT was an amazing feeling.

“Celebrate” Fine silver bowl, 2″ diameter. Appeared in PMC Annual #4, 2010

My work, if only a teeny bit, made a difference in the life of someone else.

Everything we do has an impact on someone, somewhere.  I chose to have intent that with impact . . . consciousness.

It’s like driving.  I don’t drive erratically because I understand I might crash and hurt others.

I drive my life with similar consciousness.

The deadline for “Charm School” registration is still January 31. And I am still doing a demo at Zinnia on February 9: http://wp.me/p1XDVR-I

*”Heavens to Murgatroyd”  Who, remembers Snagglepuss? . . . the sweet, silly, Pink Tiger, brought to us by Hanna-Barbera :)

All my best,

Delia
